A rescuing hand for horses.
501(3)(C) Equine Rescue. Racing for Home, Inc. was started in 2011 by Acacia Courtney in order to help raise awareness of the plight of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. The cold truth is that those horses who are injured, not fast enough, or too old to race and become a liability to their owners are all in danger of being sent to a slaughterhouse outside of the United States. Racing for Home focuses on retraining and repurposing these wonderful horses for their second careers, and so far has rescued fifteen Off-Track Thoroughbreds. As Miss Gotham City 2012, Acacia is working to bring Racing for Home into the spotlight. Racing for Home's many volunteers have dedicated their time and effort into working with Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. Several of our rescues are in training as hunter-jumpers, and, we have a wonderful therapeutic riding program for mentally and physically disabled children. And yes, these are former racehorses that the children are riding! The very qualities that racehorses are known for, such as a strong desire to please and an incredible spirit, are also what enable them to adapt so easily to second careers beyond the racetrack. Throughbreds have much more to give after their racing careers are over and can be retrained as show horses, pleasure horses, or simply as companion animals, as Racing for Home has demonstrated. With your support, Racing for Home has the ability to make a difference in the lives of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses, one horse at a time.
