However, if you live in Florida, we have an AWESOME Sponsor A Horse Program. We have both horses that can be ridden and horses that will never be able to be ridden. We accept all horses that are EIA Positive in the State of Florida and any horse in immediate need of assistance in Broward County. We also have an Outside Match Program where we put people in touch with those who are looking to give away a horse to those who are looking to adopt a horse. There are no fees, we just keep a list. We simply put you in touch with each other in an effort to find A Home for Every Horse. What is EIA? It's a blood disease found in horses. E.I.A. stands for Equine Infectious Anemia. EIA is not contagious to humans and does not affect humans. It is detected by a test known as the Coggins test. The horses at our ranch are not sick, but carry antibodies in their bloodstream to the virus that causes "equine infectious anemia" or (EIA). The chance of one horse infecting another is approximately 1 in 6 million. Regardless, there is a law in Florida requiring positive EIA horses to be quarantined on property with a 200 yard radius from the nearest negative horse. If that is not possible, the horse must be destroyed even though it is healthy. There are some stables that do not have space to comply with this law, so they must have their horses euthanized.[killed] We have worked and continue to work with various researchers including the University of Kentucky in an effort to find a cure and or a vaccine for EIA. Our herd has played a role in finding the knowledge and answers we currently have about EIA. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. needs your support to maintain a safe haven for these horses!
